The summer of 1985 marked the arrival of a version even sportier than the GTI: the Golf GTI 16V (1,800 cc producing 139 hp). Unlike its predecessor, the Golf 1.6 Oettinger, which was developed by the tuner of the same name, the GTI 16V was fully built by Volkswagen. The engine head is entirely different. As for the timing system, it uses both a belt and a chain. The GTI 16V features lowered suspension (1 cm lower than the 8V), full electronic ignition, and a dual-exit exhaust system. It also comes equipped with front power windows and central locking.
